Women in Art I

One of the things I like to do when visiting museums, galleries and other places where art is on display is to take photos of art pieces where women are the primary subjects. I find it interesting to see how different artists have portrayed women. These images are all of paintings and posters at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, FL. I cropped them to remove frames and other extraneous details so that the focus is on the women. It’s always interesting to note how most of the earlier art pieces were created by men and to ask ourselves how the male perspective has served to shape our vision of women in art. I don’t necessarily mean that in a bad way but more as another observation about the patriarchal nature of our history and culture.

When I was talking with my sister about this self-portrait series and what I hoped to accomplish with it, she jokingly suggested that I pose nude. Um, no. Nude was out of the question but it got me thinking. One of my primary goals with this project is to explore aspects of myself that I have not completely revealed in the past or that make me feel uncomfortable. So I thought maybe I should push myself a bit and pose in a way that, for me, is more scantily clad because I’ve always had a poor body image. I knew I’d have to psych myself up for it.

The She in Me

People who are familiar with my photography know that I don’t often photograph people. But as an artist, I have often felt the need to express the feminine/feminist/pagan/passionate side of myself — the she in me. This set of photo art pieces was created from my own photographs including mannequins and masks among other things. In some cases, I have also layered public domain images from Wikimedia Commons with my own photos.

You can see more of my work in my Flickr photostream.
